We often buy them but we don’t call face cream as face ointment unless something is specifically prescribed by the doctor or we don’t say Neosporin cream because we know it is an ointment. So, are they same or not? Let’s find out

Ointments and creams both are two types of topical products used to moisturize, protect, or treat skin conditions. This is the only similarity.

"Ointments and creams are not the same. Ointments are thick, greasy, and used for skin treatment. Creams are light and used for everyday moisturizing"

They are different in following ways -

  • Texture: Ointments are thicker and greasier than creams.
  • Moisturizing properties: Creams provide lighter moisturization compared to ointments, which offer more intense hydration.
  • Active ingredients: Ointments often contain stronger active ingredients (e.g., petroleum jelly, mineral oil) or medicated properties, while creams may have a broader range of cosmetic benefits.
  • Purpose: Ointments are usually designed for therapeutic purposes (e.g., treating eczema or sunburn), whereas creams are primarily used for cosmetic purposes (e.g., moisturizing and hydrating the skin)

So, ointments are in heavier base usually medicated to treat some skin condition where as creams are lighter in texture and is for everyday use.
