What is TFM in Soaps and Why Is it Important Know?

TFM or Total Fatty Matter is the percentage of fatty acids in a soap, it is usually expressed as percentage of soap's weight. It is a measure of the soap's ability to cleanse and emulsify (dissolve) oils. Higher the TMF better the quality of soaps. TFM is important as it increases the effectiveness of soap in removing dirt but at times we need antiseptic items to clean our hands or surface when we are on the move.

Why is TFM important?

Cleaning: They remove dirt, oil, and other impurities.

Emulsifying: They break down oils easily.

Moisturizing: Some may have added moisturizers to help hydrate your skin.

Bureau Of Indian Standards has set specific rules for soap bars based on TFM percentages:

• Grade 1 soaps - minimum 76% TFM
• Grade 2 soaps - minimum 70% TFM
• Grade 3 soaps - minimum 60% TFM

What is Total Fatty Matter (TFM)?

Total Fatty Matter (TFM) refers to the sum of all fatty acids present in a soap, expressed as a percentage of its weight. It shows how well the soap can clean your skin by breaking down oils and removing dirt and grime. In simpler terms, TFM measures the total amount of fatty acids in a soap - a higher content means it's more effective at cleaning and moisturizing.

Though the regulation exists on percentage of TFM in soap bar but it isn't compulsory to declare it on the soap package. If you will inspect you can find it mentioned on soaps like Liril, Cinthol, Lifebouy, Santoor, Mysore Sandal Soap etc. Most of them are above 70% TFM. So next time when you do soap shopping pay attention to the TFM (Total Fatty Matter) values as well. Attention should be made that these soaps are for cleansing purpose only they don't take into account the skin conditions. It is not recommended to use toilet soap bar as face cleansers.
